POLITICAL NOTES

THE DAY, IN PARLIAMENT

'Among-the speafcers'Tnfche Address-in-Reply debate of the House of Representatives yesterday, were the Hon. W. Dowtrie Stewart, Mr. L.. M. Isitt, and Mr. G. E. Statham. Between them, and ■with the assistance of some interjectors, they managed to provide the House with some bright moments. There are no set subjects for 3iscussion in the Address-in-Reply debate. One has a few. words about this subject, and when, what has been said is almost forgotten^ 'someone replies to it. It is like eating the confections known as hundreds .of thousands separately. The -meal may be digested easily, .but the appetite is not satisfied. The most interesting subjects dis■cussed in this fragmentary way ."were proportional representation (the Hon. Downie Stewart, Messrs. Statham1 and Isitt), State and agricultural banks (Mr. Stewart hinted that the latter would not ■be State-guaranteed), and party politics (Mr. Isitt-and Mr. Stewart, with a full ■chorus). The debate was adjourned at .11.20 p.m., on the motion of Mr. T. D. Burnett (Temuka), and the House rose.
