PEARSON MEMORIAL FUND

£25,000 ALREADY IN HAND. A meeting of the General Committee of the Sir Arthur Pearson Memorial Fund was held at the Town Hall last evening. Mr. C. M. Luke oocupied the dhair, and there was a good attenda-nce- of the committee. The secretary made a. brief progress report in which he stated that the amount in hand is £1550, and £200 has been sent direct to the New Zealand Committee. Amongst the recent donations received was one of £95 14s 8d from tho Community Singing. Committee. It was also reported that Sliss E. Arndt had col-, leoted the sum of £54 13s 6d. The chairman rnentionect that he had interviewed several branches of tlie Church, and in some cases active steps were being taken to assist # the fund. A very generous offer was received from Mr. Bert Royle, representing J. C. Williamson Co., of. the free use of the Grand Opera House. It is intended to arrange an entertainment, in which the , leading local amateurs will assist. Applications have been made to the City Council and the Harbour Board for contributions. It was stated that the fund iB being actively promoted at Eastbourne, and an effort will be made to arrange for committees to work at Petone and the Lower Hutt. Arrangements were made for tho ladies' committee to make- a personal canvass throughout the city. .-'-., Mr. Clutha-Mackenzie attended and addressed the meeting, giving a brief sketch of the general progress made in connection .with the fund throughout tho Dominion. He stated that a very liberal response had been received from all localities, and of the £45,000 required, about £25,000 was already in hand. He mentioned several cases of blind people which hail conic under his notice, and who under present conditions could not bo assisted. The establishment of the Pearson Fund will afford these people an opportunity ot obtaining training which will make them independent and useful members. of the community.
