DESTRUCTION OF ANTHRAX GERMS — ♦ - BESEARCH CHEMISTS' NEW; PROCESS. A. new process for the treatment of • -wool, whereby it is hoped to kill anthrax germs, was demonstrated recently at Liverpool before a meeting of members of the Liverpool and Bradford wool traded The demonstration was given _by Dr. Alfred Dinsley, a research chemist, of Liverpool, who with Captain A; D. Pulman is responsible for the process* the object of which is to sterilise the ; wool in bales by physical apparatus. Dr; Dinsley claimed that the process resolved itself into a new type of ray. By means of the process a powerful killing wave is produced, capable of killing the tetanus germ in from 20 to 60 seconds, and the cholera germ in from 10 to 15 seconds, and the bacillus coli almost instantaneously. The process is economical, and has the advantages of effecting .savinge in both time, labour, and money. ■ The destruction of the germs was due to the billions of electrons discharged while the apparatus was in progress, which brought about a process calculated to stop even the hardiest gorms from developing. It -was necessary for anyone handling the plant to adopt protective measures, but a full battery of four units could be quite easily handled by anybody wearing protective goggles, which would absorb the dangerous rays, a,nd protected by rubber gloves, and anything else usually used in radio work. At a luncheon afterwards given by the Liverpool Wool Brokers' Association, the chairman (Mr. John Okell) said the question of the disinfection of wool as a prevention against anthrax was one that very vitally affected the wool trade iri Liverpool, where undoubtedly the preponderance of the wool trade depended upon wools which had officially, been. labelled as dangerous.
