TROTTING CONFERENCE

CONCLUDING RESOLUTIONS FOR BETTER CONTROL OF SPORT. The annual conference of representatives of trotting clubs registered under the New Zealand Trotting Association was continued yesterday afternoon. Mr. J. Rowe (Auckland), president, was in the chair. Mr. B. C. M'Kenna (New Brighton) moved for the deletion of rule 102:— "No club shall at any meeting give a less sum in stakes than a net amount derived by such club from the use of the totalisator during the previous year, unless specially authorised to do so by a resolution of the association." The reasons given were that clubs had been subjected to very heavy expense for the making of courses and providing accommodation for the' public, and the rule left them without control over their finance. Exceedingly high stakes went to owners and breeders, and everybody in Christchurch, so to speak, now kept a racehorse in his backyard in the hope of winning a race and the staker. offered. The motion was lost on the voices. A motion to raise the fee for the registration of an assumed name from two guineas to five ,was lost. On the motion of Mr. P. Selig, on behalf of the New Zealand Trotting As-. sociation, it was resolved that: "Prior to the shipment of horses out of New Zealand, such horses must, if not already branded, be branded by some responsible persons, and his certificate of branding be supplied to the association before the necessary papers are granted." A series of amendments were adopted on the motion of Mr. Selig, excluding programmes of A. and P. shows, military sports, and other sports containing trotting events from the operations of rule 149 dealing with unregistered horses; providing for the nomination of horses recently imported into the Dominion; fixing the annual fees for trainers, and drivers' licenses, amateur or professional, at 10s; power of Judicial Committee to inflict fines and the amount of fines. The same delegate was responsible for an extensive motion for the establishment of a provident fund under rule 369. In the election of officers that followed, Mr. John Rowe was nominated for re-election as president by Mr. Cohen (Wanganui) and seconded by Mr. It. R. Mackenzie (Otahuhu). Mr. H. F. Nicoll (Ashburton) was nominated by Mr. H. H. Fraser (Timaru) and seconded by Mr. E. Evans (Nelson). Mr. Nicoll was elected by 13 votes to 10. Mr. Rowe was elected, unopposed, to the position of vice-president. The foDowing executive was elected: Messrs. E. Fox (Christchurch), L. Cohen (Wanganui), H. R. Mackenzie (Auckland).
