TAUMARUNUI GOLD

PROSPECTORS SANGUINE

"A PAYABLE PROPOSITION."

(IX T«LI«RAH.— SPECIAL TO TM MIX.)

AUCKLAND, This Day Messrs. Gobdsir and Conrad, prospectors, who have reported the discovery1 oi gold new Taumarunui are visiting Auckland. They state that they have*.been; successful in enlisting here the services of an expert to join in the venture. They look for further developments in a few. weeks, being quite sanguine that the reef will be a payable proposition. Further, the prospectors state that ttie reef is situated near an abundance of water suitable for power, and tha> the reading difficulties are not great./ At present there is a ride of eight mites over "a bush track to within three.miles of the reef The rest of the journey is done on foot, and it has been rough work for the prospectors in the winter, they having to camp in the bush without dry fuel for their fires and practically no covering in we f weather, On Wednesday two men brought 2 cwt of gold-bearing cjuartz to Taumarunui for public inspection, and they are sending this to Wellington for analysis. • - '

"There ha« been considerable improvement in prospecting for gold in both the North and South Islands." said the Minister of. Mines, the Hon. G. J. Anderson, "but so far I have not been informed of the location of any reefs of-high bearing quartz. Some of \ the samples found indicate that there' is a possibility of striking reefs in the vicinity of several places where prospecting has been carried out. We know that prospecting parties are out in the neighbourhood of Botorua and in other parts of the centre of the North Island, and on the West Coast and the southern end of the South Island." The Minister said that some of the ground which had proved to contain minerals required special legislation before operations could be carried out., and he proposed having this passed during the present session. Asked if he would indicate some of the centres where there was a possibility of securing gold, the Minister said he was not yet in a position to do so for obvious reasons. ' .
