MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Mr W. T. Strand (Mayor), and Councillors A. M'Bain, W. Meldrum, J. Brasell, J. Mitchell, W. N. Dempsey, A. J. West, A. J. Hobbs, and A. Macaskill. . -' , The Public Works Department stated that the amount of £306 8s 6d was available for the payment, of the contractor who had carried out work on the HallJones settlement. The contractors fox the work on the Hall-Jones settlement agreed to a deduction of £550 from their oontrac^ price in consideration of their not being called on to tar the footpaths. It was decided to protest against the long time the Valuation Department has taken to revise the borough rolls thus preventing the council issuing its current year's rate notices. . The Lower Hutt' Ratepayers' Association asked the council to proceed with and complete the erection of all nameplates for the streets of the borough and to consider the necessity of providing a ladies' rest room in the main street. The association is to be informed that at present ■no funds are available . for name-plates but that it is hoped to carry out the work next year. Mr. Strand said that he had a lot of sympathy with the proposal to establish a ladies' rest room, though the council had no funds at present available. It was decided to ask the association if it had any suggestions to make in regard to.'assisting the council in the matter. The tender of Messrs. King Bros., of 4s\4d per yard for the cartage of road metal, was accepted.
