THE MAID OF THE MOUNTAINS.

As the, curtain rose at the Grand Opera Houso last night on each of tha threo scenes in "The Maid of the Mountains," the audience was plainly charmed with the distinctive beauty of the' successive pictures. The gaiety and brilliance of the courtyard at the 'Governor's Palace at Santo was in strong contrast to the mountain scenery which provides an admirahlo "setting for the first act._ From, the entry of the brigands into their sequestered mountain home until the unpretentious finale—the departure from the sandy'beach of Baldassare.and Teresa—the audience followed the" love ■story of the passionate maid with intense interest and was delighted by the singing of melodious .numbei-. ..Miss Gladys Monerieff is tho maid, and her performance is a noted one. She sang admirably the songs, "My J_fo is Love,'* "Farewell" (with the brigands), "Love' Will Find a Way," and "When You're 'in Love" (a delightful duet' with Mr. Arthur Stigawt). Mi. Stigant played tha part of the gay governor, and- with Mr., Leslie Holland as' Crumpet, his aide, and Mr. Phil Smith.'as'Tonio, a comical brigand, provided ample amusement: One of the most delightful duets, .'iOver Hero and Over There," was sung by Miss Mione Stewart (Tonio's wife who believethat her hero husband is dead) and Mr. Phil Smith. "The Maid of the Mountains" should have a very successful season in Wellington.
