DIOCESAN SYNOD

OPENED THIS AFTERNOON

The third session of the twenty-second Diocesan Synod opened in the Sydneystreet Schoolroom this afternoon. His Lordship Bishop Sprott presided, and delivered an eloquent address, in which ho dealt at length with the questions of religious teaching in State schools and marriage and divorce. Bishop Sprott reported that during the past year they had lost from the staff of parochial clergy the Revs. J. G. S. Bartlett, J. G. T. Castle, and J. Walker, all of whom had done good and faithful service in the diocese. They were sorry to lose them. They welcomed to the ranks of the parochial clergy the Revs. W. Bullock, for two years provincial organising secretary of the C.E.M.S., now Vicar of Masterton; G. W. Femvick, formerly Rector of Cumingstown, Scotland, now Vicar of Ohakune; H. J. L. Goldthorpe, for eighteen months organising secretary of this diocese, now Vicar of Eltham; G. R. Finch, formerly Vicar of Winthorpe and lecturer in St. Paul's Missionary College in the diocese of Lincoln, now Vicar of Featherston; and E. W. Burgin, ordered deacon in St. Paul's pro-Cathe-dral on Trinity Sunday last, and licensed as assistant-curate in St. Thomas's, Wellington South. The Synod sermon will be preached at St. Paul's Pro-cathedral to-night by the Rev. W. C. M'Douall, 8.A., S.P.G., who for some years resided in a Chinese town of 30,000 inhabitants, being the only white resident. Mr. M'Douall was decorated by the Chinese Government for work performed in times of pestilence.
