PALMERSTON N., This Day.
An appalling tragedy, involving the death of at least six men, and possibly more, employed by the ■ Public Works Department at Arapeti tunnel, Mangahao hydro-electric works, occurred last night. Shortly after 9 o'clock something went wrong with the water-pump-ing apparatus, and at the same time it was noticed that the air fan was not working.
The foreman (A. E. Maxwell) and Bernard Butler (pump hand) went into tho tunnel to investigate. As they did not return in a reasonable time, two more men, who were subsequently followed by others, went to explore the interior workings.' ,
All were overcome with gasolene fumes from a gasolene pumping engine.
At the.present moment the following are known to be dead:—Maxwell and Butler; F. and W. Birss; and S. and F: Graham, tunnellers. H. Kinsett and T. Triggs, in charge of the air compressing plant, are in. hospital in a serious condition. . ,
The'fateof W. Miller, another member of the party, is at present unknown.
