HEREIN MASSACRE
JUSTICE PARALYSED "GOT WHA^THEYj DESERVED'^ ROWING POPOTu^ nnMCaTATION: r ' (BSITED MISS ASSOCIATION COMUUHf.) ' .' (IVIIJtIIIAK'NIW KALAND CAILI ASIMUIMIf.) flSacehred sJuly 1, 9 a.m.) ;-,-.' ISTiEXVV YORK, 30th Jun«. /Careful independent inquiry indicates that the majority of tihe murdered Herrin strike-breakers, and also the majority of the attaoking mob, were-mot foreign, bui !American-born. The artraordinary apathy of the local authorities, and the absolute silence of eye-witnesses ■of the massacre • andi of those who took part in it regarding the identity of the/leaders or personnel of the mob frustrate official and other ' efforts to pin the .responsibility on any ■ particular faction. The Herrin district--1 has a comparatively small foreign ele'nvent. No doubt it was represented in ithe mob, but. the majority were Americans of the usual mining class. They continue to smile cynically', over the affair, statinff that they have no regrets, 1 and that the strike-breakers got what they deserved. The laxity of the local officials, who are ; making- little effort to bring the murderers to justice is caus.ing increasing indignation throughout the . louatry. ■ ' !''■;
