WRONG DIAGNOSIS
During the early stages of tho Taupo earthquake series, it was stated that the telephone system in the shaken district had broken down. It was commonly assumed that this was due to the earthquakes, and, naturally, it wai taken as an alarming symptom.
It .'now appears that the telephonic breakdowns were due to quite different causes. Another "alarming symptom" was referred to by Dr. Adams in bis lecture last night. He had been told, he said, that steam was seen rising from the Waikatn River; and that, of course, hinted at tliormjil action. But the weather had Iwpii very frosty, and the steam was quite naturally to be seen in such conditions. The river, like the thermal springs ami other scenic features of the area, was quite normal.
