EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held tt-day.' Present: Messrs. T. Forsyth (chairman), -W. H. Field, M.P., C. I. Harkness, G. T. London, E. P. Risbvfortb, A. J. White, J, J. Claric, W. T. Grnndy, R. M'Calium, M.P., E. H. Penny, and It, A. Wright, M.P. , ... A suggestion was rebeivec}' from the Education Department with respect to more direct police action in * truancy cases. The object desired was to bring about greater facility and less expense in dealing with such, cases. It was^ agreed tp reply that the board 'favoured the existing system. , The Chairman moved the following motion:—"That this board tenders to Mrs. Lee arid family the deepest sympathy of its members in tlieir :lpss of an honoured husband, ancl father. That at the same time it wishes tp express, qn behalf of the community which 'he has served with such fidelity, its thankfuL ness that it has been possible to em-; brace within the compass of a wellordered life so much of. permanent accomplishment in establishing, organising, and promoting a sound system of education in New Zealand." Mr. M'Callum, in seconding the motion, alluded to the valuable pioneering work in education done by Mr. Lee, not only in the Wellington district, but also, in the Marlborough and Nelson districts. Mr., Field supported the motion, giving instances of the important work done.by the late Mr. Robert Lee. He bore sympathetic testimony to Mr. Lee's kindly nature. •' Mr. Rishworth; Mr. Grundy, and Mr. F. H. Bakewell (senior inspector) added their personal tributes to Mr. Lee's memory. The -motion was adopted, those present rising in their places.
