CARTERTON, This Day. ■ Mr. E. A. Gray, of Parkvale, was the successful tenderer at £662 13s 4d for constructing . the approaches to the Kahumingi bridge in the Masterton County. At the half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Oddfellows, Cartorton, the following officers were elected: N.G., Bro. I. Pike; V.G., Bro. W. Orange; elective secretary, Bro. A. H. Kiahagen. Seven candidates, including live ladies, were-initiated into the order. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hodder and family, of. Waihakeke, who^are removing to -the Lower Valley, were, farew.elled' by the residents of the district in the Dalejield Hall on Monday evening, and presented with a set,of stainless .cutlery as an expression of goodwill. Mr. W G, Waterson made the presentation on. behalf of the residents. The returned soldiers of the Carterton district have arranged to hold their annual ball next week, when the proceeds will be devoted to the memorial squnre. Mr. W. Buick, of Opaki, has donated a handsome silver cup to tho Wairarapa Rugby Union for. tho champion team in the north section, to be won outright twice in succession or three times at intervals. Tho Featherston Club haa withdrawn their junior team from the southern competitions of the Wairarapa Rugby Union, as soveral men were required to build up their senior team. Tho Wairarapa Rugby Union has .decided that no further reinstatements will be granted this season. , - MASTERTON, This Day. The Masterton Borough Council has received 35 applications for tho position of engineer. A. special meeting of tho council .will bo held to' consider- the applications. ■ ' ■ The amount of gas manufactured at tho Maeterton gasworks, during May showed a decrease of 8.2 per cent, compared with the corresponding month last year. Thero are 57 gas-engine accounts, and the decreased consumption represented by these accounts to,tail 279,200 cubic feet. The decrease is no doubt due to the existing conditions of business. .The Masterton Public Library has 889 subscribers. During the past month £17 5s 6d was collected for subscriptions. Thero are 10,000 books in the library. j At tho weekly mpeting of the Claims ■Board of the Wairarapa Patriotic Assooiation yesterday, nine claims for temporary relief were dealt with. ' I A match between the Masterton Miniature Rifle Club (men) and the Feathovston |" Ladies' Club was fired last night, and j after an exciting competition,- the Masterton Club won by 12 points. I At a meeting- of the Loyal Masterton ■Lodge of Oddfellows last night,' two new I members were initiated, three proposed, and ono female member was initiated. The.Masterton,'borough accounts for the year ended 31st March, 1921, have not yet been audited, and the Borough Council has decided -to send a strong protest to the Auditor-General concerning the delaj\ The first evening community "sing" last | evening was- a great success, the attendance . being larger than at the mid-day "sings'." The collection was £1 17s'5d. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council, several epeakera stated that there was serious friction and a "go-slow" policy among- the men employed on the borough drainage scheme. After a short discussion it was decided to hold an inquiry into the matter.
