ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT
Spencer E. W. Furrell_ pleaded not guilty at the Petone Magistrate's Court on Saturday to a charge of ha.ving during Bth March and 6th June, received sums of money amounting to £67 Is 7d on terms requiring him to account for hem to David M Armstrong, and fraududently omitting to account for the money. Messrs. A. Coles and J. Burn, J.P.s, were on the Bench. The evidence given was to the effect that accused acted as accountant at a> branch business in Potone, owned > by Armstrong, and known as "The National Dental." Fun-ell occupied a room in the suite belonging to the National Dental, und, according to the evidence, offered to keep the books and receive and bank moneys in lieu of paying rent, which, before this ; arrangement was made, amounted to £1 a week. Owing to his attention being drawn to an apparent discrepancy Armstrong placed the books in the hands of an auditor, who gave evidence of finding shortages amounting to the sum named. Armstrong denied that he ever promised to pay accused wages. Accused was: commit ted for trial, bail being allowed. Mr. H. H. Cornish appeared for Furrell and Senior-Sergeant Bird for the police.
