A BURGLAR SURPRISED
(BJ TELEGRAPH.—PRESB ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, 17th June. About midnight a burglar entered a house occupied by Mr. E. Warner, assistant master at the Lyttelton District High School. Mrs. 'Warner had been paying some friends a visit, o.nd her husband was in bed reading Hearing a noise- in the passage, lie took no notice at first, thinking that hi 6 wife lied returned, and had entered by the fro.it <*oor, which was open. To his surprise, a- strange, thick-set man, clad in grey, and wearing- a slouch hat, peered into the bedroom, and, thinking the occupant was asleep, switched off the electric light. Mr. Warner jumped out of «,bcd to catch the intruder, who fled hastily, not graving time to lift his brown boots, which he left On the verandah. Mr. .Warner then took possession of the boots and handed them to the police. Attempts hnd been made to break into three other houses.
