FIRES
Late on Saturday night an outbreak of firo occurred in a room at 78, Cuba-street. occupied by Miss Cooper, milliner. The firo was confined to the workroom, which was badly damaged, along with the contents. The building was insured •in the Northern Assurance* Comply, Ltd., for £7500, and the stock and fittings were covered by a policy for £945 in the Atlas Office. The Crown photographic studio, which is in the same building, was not damaged in any way. ■ . :'° (BX TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) METHVEN, This Day. The Canterbury Hotel, at Methven, a two-storied building of about forty rooms, was completely destroyed by lira early this morning. Seventeen' people were in the building, and they escaped with little more than their night clothes. The stock-in-trade, building, and furniture were insured, but the amount is not kn&wn. The licensee and lesee is James M'Taggart. The hotel was jointly owned by Manning and Co. and D. Neil, both of Christehurch.
