SENT TO GAOL

SENTENCES IMPOSED IN SHOP-

1 LIFTING- CASES!

Imprisonment was imposed by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., to-day on the two women, concerned in the shop-lifting cases before the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Lucinda Holloway, against whom there were nine charges of theft of articles of clothing from various shops, was sentenced to "three months' Imprisonment, and Elizabeth Paul, who had admitted four charges of receiving, was sent to gaol for two months. '

Chief Detective Kemp told1 the Court to-day that shop-lifting hadl been very prevalent in Wellington, especially dur- : ing the last three months. In large shops such as Kirkcaldie and Stain's it was a comparatively easy matter to steal goods, as it was difficult to keep a close watch. 'Mr. Hunt, in, passingl sentence, said that it was very probable that there had been many more thefts than had teen discovered. The girl Paul had apparently been under the influence of the older girl, Holloway; she was really am aooessory after tho fact.
