EMPRESS THEATRE,

An exceptional cast interprets "The Truth About Husbands," the Paramount release being shown to interested audiences at tho Empress Theatre. May M'Avoy, a new and dainty screen star, ihas the support of Holmes Herbert, Anna Lehr, Arthur Rankm, Richard Gordon, and others in the powerful ada.pta.tion of Sir Arthur Pinero's drama "The Profligate." It is a domestic tragedy proving the old adage that many a. wife's boast of her husband's fidelity is but further proof of his discretion. A girl fresh from college is wooed and won by a gay bachelor who seeks to bury his past, trampling down in the attempt the ■village girl whom he used to visit under an assumed name. The latter becomes involved by an unhappy circumstance in the life of the trusting wife, and results are inevitable. There are many tense scenes, while the settings are magnificent. ' Bebe Daniels, with Emory John-, stcn and Ruth Renick, points the moral about honesty in "She Couldn't Help It," the screen version of "In the Bishop's Carriage." This charming play concerns a girl crook, a bishop, a loving husband with a diamond gift for friend ■wife, the lawyer fiance of the bishop's niece, arid a gangster who proves a "frame-up" on the girl, whom he loves, but bravely gives into tho lawyer's keeping while he returns to gaol. Miss Daniels does some fine dramatic work. Ga.umont Graphic. American Gazette, a travelogue, and a Mack Sennet, comedy complete the programme, which is further enlivened by tuneful selections by Mr. 1-r. G. Avery's Distinctive Orchestra.
