KELBURN REQUIREMENTS

A meeting of the Kelburn Ratepayers' Association was held on Tuesday night" at the Training College, Mr. J. F. Atkins being in the chair. Messrs. Mainland, Edwards, and the chairman were- appointed a sub-committee to meet Mr. G. Mitchell, M.P., president of the Central Progress League, and make an inspection of the district.

An entertainment committee, consisting of Miss Maitland, Messrs. Beveridge, Page, Turner, and Professor Tonnant, was appointed to arrange for a musical evening to be given to the residents of Kelburn, when the president (Mr. M. Myors) would give a short address on the needs and requirements of tho district.

Mr. H. Mainland gave a lengthy resume of his experiences, together with the members of the association, on interviewing the civic authorities on the question of the main arterial road to Kelburn. This matter has, for a. long time, been a much discussed question with the association, and it was unanimously decided to ask the City Council whether it intends to make more flying surveys, or if it has a definite policy.

A discussion took place regarding the danger spots of Glasgow-street and the corner of Mount-street, whioh form parts of the arterial road, and the opinion was expressed that the only means to awaken the authorities to thoir responsibilities in this connection was by a serious accident which, it was said, was now long v overdue in these days of motor traffic.

Tho following- resolution was carried unanimously: —"That the City Council be urgently requested to leave tho existing company to run tho Kelburn and Karori Cable Tramway Company, as the association fully realises that, had it not been for this private company, the means of access to tho most beautiful and picturesque suburb of the Empire City wouldl b& iii the same eorry state as the desired arterial road."
