A deputation ' from , the [Association asked. the Chief Secretary, 'Mr. C. W. OakeSj for financial assistance "in the direction of some compuleory system' of payment, and suggested that the. Government should... pay a. £1 for "£1- subsidy. The Hospitals Conference had decided, it was stated, that in the event of u compulsory system being introduced, each district, should be allowed the right of continuing the voluntary..-system if it wished to do so. Mr. Oa-kes replied.that the Department was hard put to it to cope with the demands upon it, but promised an investigation to ascertain what could be done. i
