WELLINGTON COLLEGES

BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The monthly meeting oi' the Wellington College Board of Governors was held to-day. The chairman (Mr. W. F. Ward) presided. Other members present were: Sir Edward Gibbes, Messrs. T. Forsyth, W H. Denton, W. H. >P. Barber, K. Darroeh, and B. A. Wright, M.P. ■ The report of the headmaster of Wellington College stated that the roll number was now 767, and the average attendance for the month 717. An epidemic of colds and sore • throats. had sensibly affected the attendance. In reference to published criticism on the subject of "school uniform," the headmaster reported that the newspaper in -which the articles appeared had published an unqualified retraction and apology and paid all legal expenses. Similar misunderstandings could easily be obviated, in future, if persons wishing to comment on college affairs -would be good enough to get their facts in the first place from the board or from the headmaster personally. The principal of the Girls' College reported that the present attendance was 755, and' the increase of numbers had raised the grade of the school arid entitled them to an extra assistant. Additional accommodation was required, and it would be advisable to have an exti'a classroom added as soon as possible. If the three weeks of the next holidays were utilised, a great deal of disturbing noise would be avoided. The Minister would favourably consider a proposal to erect another room. In reference to the cost of school books, Miss M'Lean said the school had for a great number of years a scheme for the sale of second-hand books and requisites, which had greatly reduced the cost to parents. She had never had complaints that the price of books of any form had been found burdensome. The Chairman remarked that he had a letter from a firm of booksellers in town offering books at a cheaper .rate. The question was deferred until the next meeting, further informatior to be sought from the heads of colleges.
