MORE OPIUM
CHINAMAN FINED FOR SMOKING,
Lying on a bed in a shanty in Hainingstroet, and in a dazed condition, a. Chinaman named Ah Lye was found in tho act of smoking ooium on the occasion of a visit from Plain-clothes Constable Thorn. Lye was taken into custody, and thit morning he made »n appearance in tIT 6 dock at the Magistrate's Court, and admitted, through an interpreter, that ho had been smoking opium "on account of his health.'' He denied having had opium in his possession, however. Mr. F. X.. Hunt, S.M. (to the interpreter): "Ask him how he smoked opium if he did not have any in his possession ?" After an interview with the accused, the interpreter said that Lye said "he had a little.'* Constable Thorn gave evidence to the effect that ho had visited the house ia Hai'niug-str'eet, and had seen Lye lying on a bed smoking opium. Witness searched the room, and found a quantity of opium in a boot, and a small tin throeparta full. •■•' .■•■■• "I'll treat him as I've treated others," said Mr. Hunt, in fining Lye £10 and costs for smoking cpium and £25 for being found in possession of tho drug.
