EASTBOURNE SPORTS GROUND

IMPROVEMENTS BEING MADE,

At the meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council, the acting-general manager (Mr. R. B. Witty) reported that the fence had been completed according to specification, and a star,t had been made with the building of the: stone wall. This would be completed during the coming month. Weather permitting, the harrowing and top-dressing would be finished in a fortnight. The services of a/man used to this class of work had been secured. He was at present removing the patches affected by grass grub and screening the top-dressing. The cost of a section of land recently purchased was. stated to be £900; there was a small cottage on the land. It is proposed to lay down tennis courts on a portion of the land, the cottage probably being used to house the groundsman when he is finally appointed. Councillor C. A. Marquis considered that the tennis courts should be laid down as soon as possible. He further referred to a proposition to lease a section adjoining the recreation ground, the property of the Catholic Church. By getting a reasonable lease the council could centralise its sports grounds. The matter was referred to a committee consisting of Councillors Marquis and Hartridge.
