PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
The fortnightly meeting of the eon. raittee of the Sooiety for the "Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held at the secretary's office on Monday. The inspector's report dealt with a number of cases of cruelty looked into. One case of working horses with sores was eo gross that he had found it necessary to issue a summons against the man. A numbaV of horses had been put off work for short periods, and one horse destroyed as it was unfit for further eerThe colleoter reported that £33 8s 6d hsd been received since Ihe previous meeting in subscriptions and donations. Included in this sum were:—F. townsborough, £5; D. M.-Douglas and Mrs. George £2 2s each; Miss B. George, Mrs. T. M. Wilford, H. Cook, Sir. W. H Herries, J. D. Gray, M. M. Stables, s R. W, M'Villy, £1 la each, and J. p. Sclater, £1. The recent correspondence in. the press regarding, the starving of cats to make them kill rate was discussed. The'opinion was expressed that the proposal was cruel, as cats do not kill rats for food, and to be an effeotive ' rat-oatoher a. oat must be well looked after, and. well fed. The secretary was instructed to mako ■ inquiries as to whether, the Boy Sooirt Executive was taking- up the proposals which had been made to interest the Boy Scouts in the work of the society.
