CANTERBURY PRODUCE MARKETS
(II TELEGRAPH.— P.RBSS ASSOCIATION.)
CHRISTCHURCH, 7th March. Apparently farmers are in no hurry over threshing their oats, as very fe\y are offering. There is a shade weaker feeling among merchants, but quotations to farmers are unaltered, namely, 2s 3d to 2s 6d for A Gartons, and 2s to 2s 3d for Algerians. Wheat is coming forward freely, but millers are not operating beyond immediate necessities. There has been a heavy rejection of some wheat, iut generally farmers are accepting the lower price as for fowl feed. A satisfactory feature about later threshings is tha-t the yields are much improved. White clover is beginning to come forward, and sales have taken place of some good quality at Is 2d to farmers. Quotations nominally are lid to Is Id at wayside stations.
There has been some activity in both perennial and Italian ryegrass, but quotations cover a wide range according to quality. From 2s 9d to 3s is the ruling price. Cocksfoot also has met with inquiry, and a good sample is now worth up to s|d, equivalent to 8d for machine dressed'.
Partridge peas have met keen activity during the present week. They are still firm, though a shade easier. The figure at which business has passed is abnormally high and business is all of a forward nature. Generally the value is Bs, though a sale of a big parcel was ok the basis of 9s f.0.b.5.i., equal to 8s 5d to farmers. The "nutter" is due to Home inquiry. Other varieties are rot inquired for to much extent. Prussian biues are quoted at ss, and White Ivorys are not being asked for. Potatoes remain unchanged. Main crop quotations are £3 5s to £3 10s per ton to farmers.
