A NEW CHURCH
ST. ANDREW'S TO COST, £17,000. Members of the 'congregation of St. Andrew's Church held a meeting at the Dominion Farmers' Institute last evening to discuss matters in connection with the rebuilding of the*church on Wel-lington-terrace. The Bey. S. Robertson Orr presided. It was decided to accept the tender - of Fletcher Bros, for the superstructure of the church, the figure quoted being £10,972. This price makes no provision for the gallery and tower, included in the plans, which will involve an extra expenditure of £624 and £1016 respectively. An amendment that the tower be included in the tender was defeated, ■ but it was agreed that if sufficient money was forthcoming the tower would bo proceeded with. For this purpose subscriptions were volunteered by those present, and further efforts are to- be made to secure the required amount. 1 It waß decided'that a portion of the church property adjoining' the church site, and not now required for building purposes, •' sbould be offered for sale, and the money ■ bo realised should be devoted to the rebuilding fund. It was explained s that funds "at present in hand for rebuilding i purposes amount to £11,000, and that , the total cost of the new . church is about £17,000. It had been decided that the congregation could not undertake a debt of any more than £5000. Tho meeting accepted with thanks a gift from the'contractors of a memorial I stone, and a roll of honour stone, to |be placed one.on each side of Hhe face of the building. Fletchw Bros', tender of £2270 was also accepted for the reinstatement of the hall and Bible ' class rooms. The work will include the addition of a second story to the present wooden buildings. Messrs Clere and) Williams are the .architects for the erection of the buildings.
