CLAIMS FILED IN ARBITRATION COURT

Following the exampies set in the mining dispute, and Inter in the Waterside Workers' dispute, the' Wellington Shipowners have decided that the Arbitration: Court shall be asked to determine the wages and conditions of seamen. In the past the shipowners have arranged, at private conferences, a national agreement with i the Federated Seamen's Union, but tho tactics of tlie employers have since undergone a change. The employers last week submitted, to the seariien proposals for a nevfr agreement, hut as tbo seamen's organisation has riot replied, a dispute has been created in the terms of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, and the claims were filed'to-day in the. Arbitration' Court. It is understood that the shipowners are seeking a substantial reduction in, wages, and almost a complete revision of the working conditions., i The next . step will be a meeting of the Conciliation' Council. ,
