NEW'GUINEA PATROL LEADER SENT TO GAQL.

(Received March 6, 11.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. i It is officially stated that in a recent inter-tribal fight at New Guinea a chief and 25 natives were killed. A patrol was sent to the district to prevent further trouble, but fell into a native ambush. A skirmish followed, in which three natives wero wounded, One was in a dying condition! and suffering so severely that, actuated presumably'by motives of humanity, he was put out of his misery. As a result of this action the patrol leader was charged, with manslaughter, and sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labour.
