YACHT RACING

SATURDAY'S RESULTS

TURNBULL AND TE RURU CUPS.

Last Saturday turned out a hard I blow for the Royal Port Nicholson I Yacht ' Club's racing. White squalls chased one another about the harbour, and the races were a good test of gear and ■weatherliness. , There were: several mishaps. Ailsa carried away a rigging screw, Viola smashed a, boom, Raw ere and Windward each carried jibs away. Botli races were over the Pinnacle BuoyKoro Koto conrse, of sixteen, miles. THE FIRST CLASS RACE. The Alexandra Turnbull Memorial Cup attracted six starters. Of the entries, Rona Marangi, nnd White Heather were missing. The starters were: Wair-ere 11., Wanderer, Kotiri 11., Viola, Atalanta, mid Ailsa. Ailsa, got the best -of the start, Wairere 11. lying second, with Wa.naderer, Viola, Atalanta, and Kotiri 11. following. Crossing Evans Bay it was evident that some of the yachts had! too much sail, their helmsmen not being able to keep them from luffing into the wind. Viola paTticularly was over-can-vasedi, and was repeatedly taking charge Approaching Point Halswell, Ailsa suddenly luffed up, went about, and made for home. One of her rigging screws had given way. Her' tall Bermuda mast seemed hardly suitable : to Saturday's weather. Rounding Mahanga Bay, Wanderer took the lead, passing Wairere 11. Viola and Ata-lanta were left well in the rear by Wanderer, Wairere, II. 1, and Kotiri 11. On the run to the Pinnacle [Buoy, Kotiri set a spinnaker, and it pulled her up, but not enough; to enable her to round tne. Pinnacle Buoy before Wairere. Wanderer got well "away on* the port tack, 'and Wairere for a,little while seemed likely to challenge Wanderer's lead. Kotiri and Wairere seemed both to be over-canvased, and laboured at times in the hard squalls and) in the big seas. When Viola was approaching Pinnacle Buoy, she jibed all standing, and Smashed- her boom. Atalanta seeped a'trifle too.'snugly canvased. ,;On "the windward work Wanderer stood up straight, and rounded the Koro Koro mark ten minutes ahead of the' next boat. On the run home she improved this leadi by five minutes. She had a. runaway win.. The results were:— Wanderer (F. Hadfield),. 3miri, 2hrs ' 41mirf 15sec, 1; Wairere. 11. . (E. Bucholz), 5 mm, 2 lira 57m, 2; Kotiri 11. (J. E. Cull), 4min., 2hrs 59min 25sec, 3. I The other yachts did not finish. \ The race for the T© R.uru Cup started a quarter of an hour before the Turnbull Cup race. Of the nine entrants' seven started, as follow :—Wylo, Rawene, Sea.bird, AVindward, lolanthe, Muritai, and Galatea. lolanthe's, snug trysail was suitable for a .gale, and she got • well away from, the rest of the fleet, and rounded the Pinnacle Buoy well ahead. Wanderer, Wylo,' and Rawene were close behind. Rawene went off on the starboard tack after rounding the buoy.. The other yachts were on the Rona Bay shore. 'On coming about, it was seen that Rawene was holding a splendid position. lolanthe was still leading,to windward, and Galatea had passed the other boats, and was sailing 1 well. After getting into the neighbourhood of Somes Island, Riiwene carried away a jib, as did Windward . also. About here : Seabiid,. Wylo, and Windward retired, leaving Galatea, lolantha,.Rawene, and Muritai to finish.. At the Koro Koto Buoy competition between Galatea and lolanthe was keen. It seemed as' if Galatea on the starboard tack would beat lolanthe round, but the latter just manager" to s.lip in before her rival. On the run home, Galatea passed lolanthe. Rawene and Muritai were a .long way behind Galatea and .lolanthe,' but-th«y pluckily held on, and made a great Tace for third place. The results' are as .follow :— iolanthe, 12niin, 3hrs. 19min, 20sec, lj Galatea, scr,' 3hr . 17min 20sec, 2; Rawene, 20min, 3hrs 54min,"3. \
