CHAMPIONSHIP OF AUSTRALIA.

A tournament, to decide the chess championship of Australia,' is to be held in Melbourne next, month, play commencing on Easter Monday (17th April). This contest, which is under the patronage of the Governor-General of Australia, is arousing considerable interest in -Australasian chess circles. Liberal prizes are 'being offered, viz., £50, £30, £20, £10, and £5 respectively. The tourneyis open to New Zealanders, aiud, two of them will, it is hoped, be found'taking part. .Mr. J. B. Dunlop, of Oamaru (the present Dominion champion), •• has already been nominated—*aiid he may have Mr. A. W. O. Davies, of Dunedin, to assist him "in carrying the New .Zealand flag." The president of the Otago 0.0. has issued a circular, asking the other New Zealand' clubs to assist the project of sending Mr. Davies, to Melbourne. If the response is adequate, New Zealand's "eggs will not, be all in one basket," aa a local enthusiast put it. Mr. Davies ha» won the New Zealand championship twice, and he has been "runner-up" on three occasions. According to latest ad' vices from Australia, there will, be a good entry. New South Wales is contributing her champion (E. N, Wallace) and ex-champion (A. J. Ansaldo),'aJidthd Victorian entries will include O. G;. Watson (champion) and G. Gunderabn (exchampion). It is expected that Mr. W. Si. Vinex", the present holder of the Australian championship, will also be taking part. ■ • ; ■' OLUB CHAMPIONSHIP OP NEW ZEALAND. In / September last the Canterbury Chess Club, issued a circular letter to the other New Zealand clubs, urging the institution of aD inter-club championship tournament, and .asking for suggestion* as to how such a contest couldi be; test arranged) ahd carried out. After consider ing the various replies received, the Can> tei'bury Club has now issued a further circular, suggesting that each team shall consist of twelve players, and! that this year's drawings shall be as follow : 22nd and 29th April, Nelson v. Auck' land, Canterbury v. Otago, and Masterton v, Wellington; 13th and 20th May, Masterton v. Canterbury; 3rd and 10th June, Otago v. Wellington.; 24th June and Ist July, Nelson v. Masterton ;■ 15th and 22nd July, Aiipokland V. MftstertOn, Nelson v. Ota.go, and Canterbury v. Wellihgtoh; Sth and 12th. August, Auckland v. Otago; 26Hi August and 2nd September, Nelson v. Wellington;, 16th and 23rd> September, Auckland! v. .Canterbury ; 7th and 14th October, Masterton v. Otago, Auckland v. Wellington, and Nelson v. Canterbury.
