THE SOCCER CODE

WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION,

The extent to which Association football ] has developed in Wellington is illustrated j by figures contained in the annual report I of the Wellington Football Association. ( In ths various grades of competitions, states the report, the entries received resulted in 101 teams participating in the Saturday games, this being fifteen teams in excess of those received in 1920, and which at that time constituted a record. The following entries were also received, namely:—School, 16; Scouts, 8; and Senior Cadts, 11, making in all a total of 136 teams who participated ■in games held under the auspices of this association. In addition 105 teams took part in the six-a-side competitions held at the commencement of the season. The standard of play shown in the' yarious grades continued to improve, that of the lowergrades being in advance of anything shown in previous seasons, whilst many players of the senior grades also showed considerable improvement in various games. A welcome addition to the ranks was the arrival of a number of Old Country players. Attention had again to be drawn to the want given by players generally to a proper system of training. As arrangemonts were now in hand for the visit of an Australian team to tour the Dominion in a few weeks' time, it was hoped that players would give their serious attention to this important matter. After referring to the. fact that Wellington lost the Brown Challenge Shield to Auckland, after withstanding nine challenges, the report adds:—"During the forthcoming season the / long-anticipated visit of an Australian team to tour the Dominion is practically assured, and such a visit is sure to give an added stimulus to the game, not only in Wellington, but throughout New Zealand. So far as the playing of matches in this city is concerned, two games—a Wellington, and a New Zealand match—will be played, towards which your association is required to guarantee an amount of £300. Throughout the season your committee has strenuously opposed the decision of the council of the N.Z.F.A. to 'pool' all receipts, as it felt that the guarantors of the amount re- j quqired, viz, £300, should be the first to j have consideration after the ordinary expenses of the match are met. Your com-! mittec was in having a spec j ial general meeting of delegates called by the N.Z.F.A. to reconsider the proposal to 'pool' all receipts, and after considerable discussion the delegates in attendanco decided to abide by their previous decision, the Wellington delegates being in the minority. It is to be regretted that the remarks made by some of the delegates towards the attitude taken Up by your association were not conducive to harmony in working for the furtherance of our game, and demonstrate that they totally failed to understand the position." A matter which will need to be carefully watched by the incoming management committee, continues tla report, is the~amount of fees likely to be charged for the use of the grounds during the coming season 1, owing to the fact that the City Council has already "given notification of its intention of charging an increased rental. Whether" the extra expenses can be borne by the association t at the pre< sent time is a debatable point, and will need to be given careful attention. The courtesy extended to the committeo on all occasions by members of the Reserves Committee, and by the Director of Parks and Reserves and hiß staff, was very highly appreciated, and theii' help left nothing to be desired.
