A young man, named Henry . John Mercer, made his appearance before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at tha Magistrate's Court to-day, to answer a charge that on 3rd March, 1922,- with int-ent to defraud, he attempted to obtain, from the firm of F. Yeats, Cuba-street, furniture and goods to the value of £364 13s, by .representing that he was a married, man, and that he had a. seven-year: contract with the. Vacuum Oil' Company. In applying for a, remand until 15th M'areh, Chief-Detective Komp said that other' charges, in% rolving some thousands of pounds worth of goods, were pending. The accused had actually not 'benefited financially as tho result of his actions, but that "was not his fault. Mr. J. F. B. Stevenson, for the accused, applied for bail. This was granted, and fixedl at £100, the accused being ordered: to report to the police daily, and to be home 'each night by 9 o'clock.
