PETONE'S POSITION SECURE
INTERESTING SENIOR PIAY
(By "Not Out:")
With only two series of matches now remaining the result of the senior championship is novy disolosed. Petone will regain chann»i«n» until next season. Prior to last Saturday's play there was a> remote possibility of Midland coming out on top, but two unexpected occurrences have since made Petone's position absolutely secure. Midland, after toeing in a winning position, went under to Hutt, and Petoile, with, the odds all in favour of their opponents, Wellington, averted what appeared to be almost certain, defeat. The two matches were in striking contrast, in that one •presented a slow proqese of playing out time, and the other a vigorous attempt to snatch victory before the call of time. Both were splendid performances, the attack by Hutt against Midland, and the defence by Petone against Wellinton, and both succeeded. The positions .of the four teams contesting the fina! are now as- follow :—
Petone .....' 19 points. Hutt 8 points. Midland 7 points, Wellington '. 0 points. According to the points shown above it is possible for Hutt to lead Petone bya point at the end of the round, providing that Petone suffered two losses and Hutt .gained two three^point wins, Such a position, unlikely, but quite possible, would give Hutt a . total of 14 points and Petone 18 points. The method of deciding the championship by the "greatest proportionate points would, however, favour Petone, as they have played an indecisive match. Thus, Petone would have 13 points Out of a possible of 27, and EDutt would ha.ye H points out of a possible oi 30, a fraction slightly in favour of Petone. So that, whatever happens the championship title cannot toe wrested from the present holders.
