Tho Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, returned to Wellington from Auckland this afternoon.

The Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister of Customs, has returned to Wei lington.

The Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes has taken over the position of Commissioner of State Forests from Sir Francis Bell, who leaves for England shortly.

The Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Labour, will leave for the South to-mor-row night on public business. He will visit Greymouth, and will return to Wellington on Sunday morning.

The Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Education,, will leave for Auckland to-mor-row. He .will" attend the centenary luncheon of the Methodist Church, and) will return to Wellington on Friday.

A message from Norfolk Island announces the death of Mr. Olliver Macey Quintal, aged 78, an ex-barrister of the New Zealand Court. . '

A private cable message received in Wellington announces that Mr. and Mrs. J. J.< M'Grath have arrived in Rome, and are in good health. They had the honour of a private, audience with the Pope, and were the first colonial callers to be presented to him.

Mr. C. E. Bridge, of the staff of the A.M.P. Society, who has been on re-, lieving duty in Hamilton for the past month, is now in Palmerston North, where he is carrying on the duties of District Manager in place of Mr. G. W. G. Daviee, who is away- on holiday 'leave.

Mr. A. D. M'Leod, M.P., intends at the next meeting of the Featherston County Council to tender his resignation after 25 years' continuous service, in the course of which he was for many years chairman. When first elected to the council he was only 23 years of age, and had already served, two years on the Road Board. Since the "death of Mr. John . Martin a few months ago Mr. M'Leod has acted as treasurer, to the council.
