The steadily progressive tendency of oil to supersede coal for combustion both In old and new vessels made considerable progress last, year (says an exchange). During the past three years the increase has been enormous, and indicates that industrial conditions during and subsequent to the war gave a tremendous impetus to this important economic development. Figures taken from Lloyd's Register book show that at July, 1914, the gross tonnage of vessels burning oil fuel was 1,310,209 tons, but in July, 1918, the tonnage had increased to 5,336,678 tons, and that figures showed further advances in 1920 and 1921 to 9,359,334 and 12,796,635 tons respectively. Some Impression •of the industrial significance of the change may be gauged from the .estimate-in the annual report of Lloyd's Register of Shipping for the year 1920-21 that the consumption of coal by steamers now in existence and fitted for oil fuel would approach 20,000,000 tons per annum, or about 8.7 per cent, of the coal raised in the United Kingdom in 1920. Apart ' from the relative cost of coal and oil as fuel, an all-round economy is claimed for oil-burning ships in labour, bunker space, accommodation of crew, and time in port, all of which aro factors having an important bearing on running costs, especially In large passenger jes- j jatak .- ' J

The Clan McAlpine is expected at Wellington to-morrow afternoon from Fort Chalmers to discharge a cargo of hardwood. The'vessel is later to proceed to Brisbane-. The C. and D. liner Port Bowen sailed from London on the 12th January for Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due at Lyttelton on the 21st February. The steamer Joan Craig is reported as having left Newcastle on Friday with a cargo of hardwood for Wellington and Lyttelton. she is due here next Thursday. At a meeting of the Wangauui Harbour I Board the chairman <Mr. A. G. Blgnell) stated ! that the revenue for the past year was a fresh I record, the figures being £25,580, as against; £24,656 in 1920. The tonnage for Wanganu! was likewise a record, the figures being 592,450, as against 573,392 tons in 1920. The chairman expressed the opinion that if the meat pool proposals vyere carried into effect Wangauui w.ould continue to be one of the chief loading ports.
