AUTOMOBILE CLUB

According to its annual report, the Wellington Automobile Club has a membership of 528, and its subscription's for the year amounted to £482. The report refers to the Motor Vehicles Bill and the Main Roads Bill, and states that the club hex worked with the New Zealand Automobile Union arid kindred associations in urging the early introduction of the Bills. The committee supports the Minister's proposals to make effective' provision out of Dominion finance for the construction of auch main roada as may be declared arterial highways, thus relieving local bodies of all costs and charges in respect of such arterial highways, thus increasing the amount which local bodies can devote to the construction and maintenance of district roads. ' Every opportunity has been taken to oppose the introduction of toll gates. Regret is expressed that the City Bylaws Committee has not acted on the club's various suggestions for the safety !of the public. The committee considers it is the duty of the City Council to educate the public how to use the streets by posting notices in tramcars and other places,, and by providing special orossingplaoes for pedestrians in congested streets. The Wairarapa Automobile Association is thanked for undertaking the fencing of the Rimutaka Hill-road. One mile of fencing from the Summit towards Wellington has already been completed. Attempts have been made to form subsidiary branches of tho club at Lower Hutt and Petone, but the committeo reports with regret that no progress hus been made in this direction.
