SATURDAY'S REGATTA.

After two unfavourable S.»turd*ys> necessitating the postponement of the skin' events, the local Rowing Association experienced a fine day .last Saturday,,..when.;' the opening . day regatta, whiph includedthe Redding Shield contest, was held. There was little wind, 'the ■< water was calm, and the half-mile, course, extending from along 'Oriental Bay to the end of^the Taranaki-street Wharf, vras'an ideal one for skiff racing. There was a large number of spectators, who followed the races with interest. In all the events competition was keen, and very little distance separated the boats at the finish/. The most interesting' r»oe of the da/y was the Maiden Fours. For this event -five crews entered/ two each from. Petone and Wellington, and one from Star. Wellington received first and second places by very narrow margins, with Star anfi Petone very oloso up. At the end of the course the five boats were all in a bunchIn the Senior Double Sculls Star and Petone raced, abreast for the greater part of the distanoa, and then Star won by a few inches.
