REPLY t6 SIR T. PARKINSON

GREAT REMEDIAL AGENCY

(UHIIBD PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPTRIQHT.j

(AUSTRALIAN - NBW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

(Received Ootober 8, 9 a.m.)

LONDON, 6th October

In reference to the interview given, by Sir Thomas Parkinson in Auckland, in which he is reported to have declared that radium has proved a failure, Professor Lazarus-Bajlow declares that as the result of the continuous use of radium for sixteen years, he was never more confident that it wai one^of the greatest agents lor the treatment of disease ever discovered. "It has effected the most remarkable results in canper, though it has only been known for twenty years. The knowlddge of surgery has been growing through the ages, yet who will declare that every surgioal operation is a success? I Relieve we are only on the threshold' of the benefits accruing from radium." Professor Lazarus-Barlow has recently .been conduoting experiments with radium that have resulted in important extensions of the knowledge of its use. He declares that more research is wanted. East failures hay« not been the fault of iadium, but of the operators. Sir William Milligan, of the Manchester Radium Institute, expressed the opinion that Sir Thomas Parkinson's knowledge of radium is not extensive. The evidence provided through the Lon^ don and/Manchester Radium Institutes was quite contrary to Sir Thomas Par? kinson'g experiences. .Apparently he was not acquainted with the' foreign h'terature. on the subject, which showed that distinguished continental surgeons had entirely discarded "cutting" in favour of Tadium.
