BACON TRADE

EXPORT AND LOCAL.

The great possibilities of the bacon trade were referred to by the member for Wellington North (Sir John Luke) in a question addressed to the Prime Mm*. ister in ' the House of ' Representatives yesterday. He asked if Mr, Massey, durinej his visit to England, had had hi* attention, drawn to the great amount of bacon imported to Great Britain. In 1920 the value of the imports was £90,000,000, and in 1919 £73,500,000, Would th« Prime Minister consider taking eteps to encourage pig-breeding in New Zealand bo as to build up art export trade, which these figures showed could become of great value? The Prime Minister said that he had nipt dealt with the matter on his last visit, but on previous visits he had been able to see the treme'pdous value of the trade. He thought the suggestion a very good one, and he would be glad to call the attention of the Department concerned to it and make inquiries as to the development of the trade.

Another aspect of the same question— the local aspect—was the subject of an inquiry by Mr. H. Poland, addressed to the Minister for Industries and Commerce. Mr. Poland 6tated that the re.tail price of bacon in Auckland was Is 8d per~lb, and farmers were being offered 7d alb for bacon pigs. SinGe September the price of pork had gone down by 2d, and the price of bacon had risen Id: The Minister said that he would ask the Bpard of Trade to make an immedir ate inquiry into the matter.
