OBITUARY

MR. WILLIAM WYINKS.

Very general and sincere_jegret will be expressed' regarding the death of Mr. William Wyinks, Registrar-General of Lands' and Wellington District Land Registrar, which took place at the Bowenstreet Hospital on Wednesday night. Mr. Wyinks, who was in his 67th year/ had a most genial personality, was a hard worker, and was. freely recognised as one of the highest type of public servants we have in this country. He came out to New Zealand as a lad from Elgin, Fifes-hire, and became a resident of Otago, where, in 187S, he joined the Land Transfer Department. After serving for some years in the Department he qualified as a solicitor, and was then appointed District Land Registrar at Invercargill. He was later transferred to Dunedin, and then to Christchurch. and finally, in 1918, on the retirement of Mr. Bridges, was appointed RegistrarGeneral and Wellington District Land Registrar. He was to have retired at the end of this month, and thus held these positions a.t the time of his death, his total length of service in the Department being +3 years. In his younger days Mr. Wyinks was one of the foremost athJetes in the Otago province. He was captain of the old Union Football Club and represented Otago on the football field. He was 'a well-known cricketer, playing for the Caxisbroc-k Club. He leaves a widow, four daughters, and a. son to mourn their loss.
