SECOND DIVISION CHALLENGE CUP.
Thorndbn met and defeated Brooklyn on Association Park by 2 goals to 1. The game was an exception to the fact that most of the leading Second Division games had resulted in better football than the Senior* Division, being a poor display. Thorndon were short of a good half-back through injury, and others were obviously suffering from old knocks. Brooklyn had. one or more leading pjayers away with'the 'flu.
Thorndon, with the sun and wind behindithem, started off with a rush, and several pieces of good play nearly led to a score, but the Brooklyn defence was steady and prevented a score. ■ Before very long the Brooklyn forwards' worked up to Thorndon goal and a maintained attack resulted in Wilkinson obtaining a goal, Stanton dropping tfie ball through his own goal. The attack was kept up, and only the persistent good defence of S. Anton and Sutton kept Brooklyn out. A good clearance and a pass to W. Anton gave the latter his chance,', and, starting from almost half-way, this clever forward gave the Brooklyn goalkeeper no chance. On'p all. On another occasion Thorndon forwards lost a good opportunity of bustling the goalkeeper through the goal. \ ..
In the second half, Brooklyn for some time held the upper hand, bad passing and very inaccurate kicking on Thorndon's'part giving their opponents every chance. Gradually, however, the Blue and Yellows tightened their hold on the play and they showed glimpses of their proper form. Towards the end of the game Thorndon secured a corner, which was splendidly placed by P. to Anton's foot. The centre-forward did not give the Brooklyn goal-keeper a chance of saving the shot. No further score was made, Thorndon winning a very spiritless game by 2 goals to 1. Mr. F. W. Teagle capably controlled the game. . .
