The Government has announced that it has decided to discontinue the ■universal eight-hour day in the railway service. Experience has proved that., the cost of working on this foasis is prohibitive. Wh«r« the work is sufficiently exacting, the hours will be forty-eight par week. The Government recognises that tlie change will be unpopular, but it is satisfied that it ia unavoidable, and hopes that the staff will realise the (seriousness of- the financial .poaiibion.
