WAY TO ECONOMY

SAVING A HUNDRED

MILLIONS

STARTLING RECOMMENDATIONS

THE BUSINESS MEN'S COM-

MITTEE.

(UNITSD PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.)

(AUSTRALIAN - NEW ZEALAND CA»LI ASSOCIATION.) ■■■ LONDON, Bth September.

The Business Men's Economy Committee, of which Sir Eric Geddes is chairman, has found ways of saving a hundred millions in the next Estimates. The committee's main recommendation is the abolition of labour exchanges. The. committee admits that some local machinery will be necessary while the Government continues to pay unemployment insurance, but believes it can be done simply and cheaply. The committee has made startling recommendations for economising in Mesopotamia and Palestine, but this will involve an important reconsideration of Cabinet policy. Other recommendations are drastic economies in expenditure on the army and naval dockyards. It is hoped to economise farther by reducing the cost and size of the Civil Service, though it is expected difficulties will be encountered.
