NEW GIRLS' COLLEGE

EXCAVATION TO BE STARTED

MONEY FOR BOYS' OBSERVATORY.

. Questions relating to the site for Boys' .College Observatory, and preliminary work on the new Girls' College, were considered at this morning's meeting of the Board of College Governors.

The Chairman (Mr. W. F. Ward) stated that the Governor-General had informed him that he had no objection to a portion of Government House grounds being taken for the observatory, and suggested that the Board of Governors communicate with the Prime Minister. Presumably, therefore, tho board could have a piece of land it required. Mi-. Ward mentioned, however, that a letter had been received from the Director of Education (Mr. J. Caughley) regretting that under existing financial conditions it was impossible to obtain a grant for a new observatory building at the present time. With regard 'to the preparation of the Girls' College site, this, stated the Director, could not be completed until the instruments at least were removed, and it was suggested that tho board put that matter in hand at once. The Public Works Department was prepared, "to carry out the excavation as an unemployed relief work. It was stated that the Minister had promised that money for the observatory site would be available.

The chairman was authorised to ask the Public Works Department to proceed with the excavation work for the Girls' College, and the board decided to write to the Department reminding it of the Minister's promise with regard to the observatory.
