COMPETITIONS.

What are competitions? This is a question which, during the past four years, ha,s been frequently asked in this city, and ;is often answered. Perhaps the simplest answer would be to state that "competitions" mean an annual gathering where boys and girls, men and women, meet to compete for prizes in singing, instrumental, playing, dancing, speech-making, elocution, drawing, etc. This year the Wellington' Competitions Society has received upwards of 2000 entries for its coming festival, which will commence in the Town Hall on Tuesday next, under the patronage of His .Excellency the Qovernor-Oeneral (Viscount J«fiiooe).
