THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(II "«1R tANCIL»T.")

There are forty-two horses engaged in the Trial Plate at the Rangitikei Hunt Meeting. This may necessitate the race being run in two divisions. Nicomar, who appears to have scoKd a bloodless 'victory in the Hunt Club Cup at Dannevirke, is one of the Spalpeen tribe. He was among the winners at the National Meeting six years ago, when he was an aged horse, and will soon be entitled to a place among the veterans. Nicomar has three engagements at the Rangitikei Hunt Club's Meeting next month.

On the concluding day of the Queensland Exhibition Meeting, Mr. E. J. Watt won tho Flying Handicap with Aetes, a four-year-old gelding by Wolawa—Perseis, a New South Wales bred mare by Positano—Circe, who had some progeny ln.the Dominion before being sent to tho other side.

Black Art, who raced consistently, but without much luck at the back end of last season, has made a good start by winning both hack events at Dannevirke. Black Art is by All Black—Dear Heart, and is therefore full brother to Black Heart and Manawaponga, both successful jumping performers. » At Rose'hill on the 13th insfc. the successful performer Greenstead (The.Wei-, kin —Tuning Fork) created a sensation by winning the Dundas Handicap on his first appearance this season. Ridden by an apprentice, he carried 9.11 and ran six furlongs in lmin 13isec. Master Orifiamme, winner of the Te Matu Hunters' Steeplechase at Dannevirke, is by Ngatarua, a Sou-wester horse who was a fair performer, but has not been a stud success, from Miss Oriflamme,' probably a daughter of Oriflamme (Dreadnought—Montmarte), dam of Lady Disdain, who produced Bee, Snub, Rebuff, etc. .

Big Chief and Athens 11., two members': of W. J. Donovan's team at present in training at Randwick, are engaged at. the Warwick Farm Meeting this afternoon.

Admiral Codrington and Truthful, who finished first and second in the Oringi Welter at Dannevirke, are both engaged in tEe Avondale Cup. Admiral Codrington meets Truthful on 41b worse terms, and does not incur any. extra weight for the Dannovirke win.

Flitch, winner of the first three-year-old handicap of the season in Victoria, is by Flippant from Flay, by Flavus— Albuera, by Soult—Hotcherina. Mr. George Currie had Albuera "mated with Flavus on two occasions, the produce being the fillies Flay and Astra. . Sunray, winner of the Akitio Ladies' Bracelet at Dannevirke, is a well-bred gelding by Fort William*—Dazzling. He is engaged in a similar class of event at the Egmont Meeting. The successful Queensland performer Syceonelle was beaten in the Deninan Plate, a weight-for-age race, run on the •concluding day of the Queensland Exhibition Meeting, by Elfare (Liriacre —Bewitch). Ijlfare earned 9.4, and ran nine furlongs in lmin SOfsec. Both the Trentham-trained horses that competed at Dannevirke (Hallucination and Printemps) finished in the money, and the former paid his supporters a dividend. Hallucination was placed onco last season : out' of eleven starts, and was among the unsuccessful competitors at the Grand -National Meeting. The last two A.J.C. Craven Pla.tes have been credited to The Welkin through the agency of Gloaming and Greenstea-d. The chances are that both will run again this year, and at the time of writing Gloaming is doing so well that ho is bound to take a lot of beating in that race and the Spring Stakes. Furthermore (" Pilot " states) he is going to b-e quite ready to make a good bid for his second Chelmsford Stakes. Greensiiead is also going to be at his best, and, while holding the Randwick mile record, he shares that for a mile and a-quarter with Cetigne. Tornea (Finland —Sounette) and Te Maire (Yankee Jack—Torpedo mare), who put up a good finish in the Hunt Club Hurdles at Dannevirke, are engaged in a similar class of event at Egmont. Tornea, who is liable to be 1 rehandicapped, is also engaged in a maiden steeplechase event. ' : ■

Mr. Bruce Joll's pair of three-year-olds, Danger Zone (Martian —Crimson Rose) and Still Sea (Absurd —Sea Spray), are to be given a race at the EgmontTaranaki Hunt Club's Meeting, to be held on Wednesday next. • * ' The Blenheim-owned horses Ditcliley and Spelsbury are. engaged at the Eg-mont-Wanganui Hunt and Marton Meetings.

Three-year-olds are generally seen to advantage at the early spring meetings. Two horses of the age mentioned finished first and second in the Trial Stakes at Dannevirke. Both had run once at two years of age. Tolerance (Boniform — Innocence) was bred by Messrs. Riddiford Bros., and carried their colours last season. Recently he was sold to Dr. C. C. Murphy, a patron of F. Quinlivan, the Hastings trainer. Tinihantja (AbsurdFormless) was bred by Mr. R. D. O'Donnell and cost the I^ouglas Trustees 350 guineas as a yearling. Tolerance will probably make his next appearance in the Farewell Hack Welter at the Rangitikei Hunt Club's Meeting! Big Chief (Mountain Knighf^Swallo-w) ran second in a Maiden Plate at Moorefield last Saturday on his first public appearance. Big Chief is engaged in the principal spring, handicaps in Australia and the' Dominion.
