CHRISTCHURCH, 24th August. At the Addington mafket'there was a small yarding of mutton and an average yarding of beef and store sheep. Store Sheep.—A further drop of several shillings per head was recorded, values being lower than for a number of years at this season. About half of the entry was sold. Good 6 and 8-tooth halfbred ewes 16s, ordinary 10s to 13s 6d, good 4 and 6-tooth ewes 15s, ordinary 2, 4, 6, and 8-tooth ewes lls 3d to 12s, good sound and failing-mouthed ewes 13s 6d to 13s 9d, forward 2-tooth wethers 15s, ordinary 4 and 6-tooth wethers .13s 6d to 14s, forward 14s 6d to 15s, mixed sex hoggets 6s to 10s 4d, cull wether hoggets 4s Id.

Fat Sheep.—Consequent on the two local freezing works opening to deal with the surplus of fat sheep in Canterbury, ithe entry showed a marked falling off, being little more than half that at recent markets. Values, as a result, appreciated by 4s to 5s per head on last week's low rates. Extra prime .wethers 26s to 355, prime 20s 9d to 25s 3d, medium 17s 6d to- 20s 3d, light and unfinished lls to 14s 9d, "prime hoggets 15s 9d to 17s lO.d, ordinary 12s 4d to 15s 6d. . ' .

Fat Cattle.—A yarding of 396, mostly of inferior" quality. Prime beef sold at about last week's values, but light beef was weaker. Extra prime steers £19 to' £22, prime £14 15a to £18, medium £10 5s to £14 ss, light and unfinished £6 to £9 -15s, extra prime heifers £H 7s 6d, prime £9 10s to £12 10s,. ordinary £5 ,10s to £9 ss, extra prime cows £34 2s 6d, prime £9 to £12, inferior to ordinary £5 to £8. . . Vealers.—A fair demand. Runners £5 ss, medium vealers £2 17s 6d to £3 15s, small 15s to £2 12s 6d. Dairy Cattle.—A large entry, and a keen'demand for good stuff, Good second and third talvers £15' 10s to £19 .55,. medium second and third ealvers £10 to £13 10s, good springing heifers £14 10s, old cows £8 10s. Store Cattle.—A yarding of poor quality with sales at about last week'i basis.

Fat Pigs.—A medium entry met with moderately good competition, except for porkers, which eased slightly. Choppers £4 to £7 10s, light baconers £i 15s to £5 10s, heavy £6 to £6 15s, extra heavy £7 10s, average price per lb Bjd to Bjd; %ht porkers £3 to £3 10s, heavy £3 15s to £4 10s, average price per lb 9id to lOd. Store Pigs.—A large entry, and a weaker demand, prices receding slightly. Medium stores £2 10s to £2 18s,.small £2 2s to £2 Bs, weanora 19s to £1 12s, sows 1 in pig £7- ;

The Minister of Public Works and preference were the subject of a letter rorfeived at a meeting, of the executive of the Canterbury Industrial Association^ from Mr. J. W. Collins, 6! the Department of Industries and Commerce. Mr. Collins wrote that in replying to a. deputation which protested against an alleged variation of the principle approved by the Government of giving preference to New "Zealand manufactures in Government contracts, the Minister had staled that lie certainly favoured some preference being given to New Zealand, firms, n.nd that, as a matter of fact,* an approximately 10 to 15 per cent, preference was given to them. Mr. Coatcs had added that he intended to go into ] the whole question, and if New Zealand had the artisans and plants capable of t-urniing out work it should certainly be given locn-lly.
