PATIENTS IN HOSPITAL

The average number of patients under treatment at the Wellington Hospital last month was 388. To-day there are 399 patients in the institution, including 35 scarlet fever cases, 15 infantile paralysis, 11 diptharia, 9 influenza, and 18 venereal cases. There are 35 occupied beds in the Ewart Hospital for consumption.

An endeavour was made by Sir Edwa.rd Gibbes at the annual meeting of the Wellington, branch; of the New Zealand Superannuated ' Public Servants' Association yesterday afternoon to impress upon the executive the necessity of refraining from the use of terms which might possibly be harmful. He drew attention 'to the following paragraph in the report :—"For the rest, the notorious 'list of insulting questions issued >by someone—nobody, co far, is accepting the parentage—lias been the official recognition. That travesty of generosity is for Parliament to deal with." The chairman (Caiptain W. de/ B. Barclay) said that he was -responsible for the paragraph, and the only difficulty, in his mind, was not to put ;,it more strongly. "My point is this," ho said. "There- was no justification, and there is no justification, for that list of questions. We are determined to have thrashed out on the floor of Parliament the origin of those questions, and their author. (Hear, hear.) We haive to g«t out from the fog of officialdom and get down to facts. Every man who was asked to consent to those questions has been put in the position of being a helpfess individual, and bullied by someone else, but we will not submit 'to anyone being bullied. I say that fearlessly."

Mr. Fred Pyne, of the Taumarunui branoh of tho Bank of Australasia will succeed Mr. E., J. G. Rice tas teller at the MasTerton branch. Mr. Pyne was for some years a member of the staff of tho Wanganui branch.
