At the Supreme Court to-day, William Baker, alias Barker, alias Thomas, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a coat and vest valued at £7 10s. Accused, who had a long ' list of previous convictions, was sentenced to six ,raonths' hard labour, and declared to be an habitual criminal. Counsel for Harry Cohon, found guilty on the previous day of charges of indecent assault, made application for certain questions to be reserved to the Appeal Court. The questions concerned his Honour's direction that putting a child on promise is treated by law as equivalent to putting an adult on oath. 'The Judge intimated that he would . consider the points raised, and sentence was deferred until to-morrow. Francis John Taylor was found guilty of indecent assault, and was sentenced to three years' imprisonment with hard labour. AUCKLAND, 24th August. • At the oupreme Court Gus Edward Loomb, Kcd 50, for the attempted carnal knowledge of a girl at Panmure, was sentenced to a j'ear's hard labour, and Thomas' Henry Loomb, aged 57, for the carnal knowledge of the same girl, was sentenced to .a year's hard labour. Joseph Ernest Smith, for tTieft of his employer's money at Opotiki, was admitted to probation for five years. The Crown decided not to proceed in the case of James Alfred Martin, alleged rape in April, 1920. At two previous trials the jury faijed to a.gree.
