MATCH AGAINST SOMERSET

The weather was fine and the wicket in excellent o.rder for the Australians' match against Somersetshire to-day. There were six thousand spectators. Armstrong won the toss, and the team had completed its innings when stumps were drawn, with a. score of 331. Out of Australia's total Collins made 101 and Ryder 124. Bridges took the bowling honours by securing five wickets. Not a single sundry was recorded. The fielding throughout was of a high quality.

The Somerset team consisted of Daniell, . M'Bryan, Johnson, Rippon, Considine, Lowry, Wharton, Robson, ing of Bridges and' Robson, the latter a White, Bridges, and Lyon. Collins and Mayne opened to the bowlveteran of 51. Mayne, at 13, was Bridges's first scalp, being beaten, by an off-break off his pads. Macartney started with his .. usual, -freedom, drawing three of Bridges's balls in succession to the boundary; but before he had got set !he, was dismissed by it trimmer from White, who had displaced Robson. Two, for 62. Bardsley, -who was uncomfortable, saw Collins nearly caught at the wicket by Lyon off Bridges—a fate which befell himself in the next over. Three for 76.

Collins and Byder had ,a productive partnership. In two hours they put on 141 runs. Numerous bowling changes were tried, but the bowlers were tired before a separation was effected. Collins was dismissed by a full toss on the foot. He batted for three hours, and hit twelve 4's- He was lucky, for he gave three chances. The next two wickets (Andrews and Taylor) adcjed nothing to. the score. Armstrong joinnd. / Ryder, and both played vigorously. Ryder's century was reached in 168 \ minutes. Just before 300, which took 245 minutes, was reached. Lowry found Armstrong's wicket. M'Donald .smote Robson for 6. Mailey played on. Ryder gave no ili.inces, with forceful good driving, and hit soven 4's. . '.
